"Triumph Fruit Wrench" by Louise K. Lantz, 1976 "The Triumph Fruit Jar Wrench, made of iron, is one of the earliest patent-dated canning jar openers. It is marked "Triumph Fruit Jar Wrench, Pat'd. Nov, 3 '03, M'fd. by Benj. P. Forbes, Cleveland, O." The screw lid was first made successfully by John Landis Mason, a skillful tinsmith who specialized in the making of zinc caps. However, the screw bottle and jar cap was not widely used until about 1900. After this date numerous openers were devised for the unscrewing of these lids." |
